Willie Spies has been writing columns for Beeld and Netwerk24 since 2016 that interrogate the state of the macro-environment of state decay, but always also contemplate the micro-reality of one’s own humanity, faith, sadness, loneliness and forgiveness. In his columns, Spies examines a new ideal of freedom 30 years after ’94, and looks at the ways in which civil society fills gaps left open by the state. Heindrich Wyngaard talks to Willie about the legal concept behind the book’s title and the direction of the path on which many South Africans find themselves.
