Medical ethics did not become an inherent part of medicine and biomedical sciences until the second half of the 20th century. In this presentation, key aspects of it are examined. In particular, it is asked why ethics has not only become indispensable for medical and research practices these days, but also what influence the demand for moral medicine has had on medical ethics. In short: The question is not only what ethics means for medicine, but also what medicine means for ethics.
