Set in Motion<\/i> takes as its point of departure Newton\u2019s first law of motion: an object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force.<\/span><\/p>\n

This work from Figure of 8 Dance Theatre takes this scientific law and applies it to human experience. Dancers are in a constant state of motion. Visual patterns ebb and flow; movement is at times staccato, at times repetitive, sometimes eruptive, but always bound by the certainty of constant motion, suggesting a restlessness in the human spirit that is never satisfied. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dancers use swathes of fabric that represent how we connect, entangle, snare, bind, and caress not only each other but our own individual desires which in turn become the catalysts for treading new paths. The twists of fabric that surround the performance space echo the thematic thread, suggesting helixes, ghosts, shields, sails and surfaces from which to rebound. And motion like a tidal pool, rises and subsides across the stage as dancers constantly appear and retreat in groups, pairs, singly, supported, entangled, quiet, turbulent, and ever moving. <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Set in Motion<\/span><\/i> is most successful when the choreography embraces abstraction. The moment when dancers are catapulted from one side of the stage to another on cloth dragged across the floor, for example, is one of such clarity and beauty precisely because the abstracted layering of imagery and the meaning result in a visceral resonance that stays with you long after you have left the theatre. Dancers perform with an authenticity that never wavers and bring a dynamic talent and energy to the stage that is the hallmark of the Figure of 8 aesthetic. <\/span><\/p>\n

Note: <\/span><\/i>This production<\/span> opened at the Baxter Theatre in July 2023 and in 2024 was performed at the Suidoosterfees and at KKNK where it won the Herrie Prize for groundbreaking work. Since then, Figure of 8 Dance Theatre has established a Performance Development programme for young dancers, some of whom are performing in this expanded version of the work. Life, it would seem, does indeed imitate art, as Figure of 8 fulfills the premise of <\/span>Set in Motion<\/span><\/i> and nudges itself onto a new trajectory. <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
