Jazz en klein, intieme venues is ideale pasmaats. Veral as dit \u2019n stem is soos Nic Miso met Melisizwe Plaatjie wat die klawers streel en laat praat in tale. <\/p>\n

Plaatjie het verlede jaar \u2019n Woordtrofee ontvang as beste opkomende kunstenaar, en vandat die eerste note val, trek daar \u2019n behaaglikheid deur die gehoor. Daar is die belofte van die kwaliteit van klanke wat hier gaan opklink . <\/span><\/p>\n

Hulle stel nie teleur nie. Nic kan note diep, diep gaan uithaal en teen die tyd dat dit oor sy lippe spoel, is dit pure genot op die oor. <\/span><\/p>\n

Die volgepakte Petites Bulles was \u2019n ontvanklike gehoor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Omdat die musiek jou innooi, opchat, \u2019n soentjie wil steel, is dit egter moeilik as jy nie jou vryer kan sien, of selfs in dieselfde kamer is nie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dit was een van die goed wat gekrap het tydens die jazzduo se konsert by Petites Bulles, een van die relatief nuwe venues by die Woordfees. Dit, en die feit dat kelners deur \u2019n venue wat van hoek tot kant volgepak was, moes vleg om kos en wyn te bedien. Baie steurend as jy eintlik daar is vir die musiek om oor jou te spoel en iemand stamp aan jou om met \u2019n skinkbord verby te skuur. <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Gaste moes in drie verskillende vertrekke sit, wat nie sal pla as jy daar eet of met vriende kuier nie, maar lol as jy na \u2019n vertoning kom kyk waar jy nie die kunstenaars kan sien nie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dit is sleg met iets so intiem soos die duo se uitvoering, en veral omdat hulle met reg beskryf word as van die belowendste jazz-musikante. Albei is honneurs-studente aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch se Konservatorium. <\/span><\/p>\n

Felicia Lesch, voorheen betrokke by die US se Jazz Band en as dosent, was die aand ook daar \u2013 Nic en Melisizwe is nog studente van haar noudat sy \u201csemi-afgetree\u201d is.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

  • The programme was a good mix of original material and well-loved covers and jazz standards. With Nic on voice and Melisizwe on piano, this duo presented a polished, well thought-out performance which was perfectly suited to the intimate setting of Petite Bulles. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • They opened the concert with my all-time favourite, \u201cThrow it away\u201d by Abbey Lincoln, sung passionately by Nic, and included songs like \u201cMango Picker\u201d with its tricky 7\/4 rhythms, which Plaatjie had the audience clap. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • They paid tribute to Mafikizolo with a soulful rendition of \u201cEmlanjeni\u201d and demonstrated their versatility with the inclusion of \u201cYellow Brick Road\u201d and other favourites. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Two original tunes \u2013 \u201cPursuit of Happiness\u201d and \u201cBetter Days\u201d, written by Miso and Plaatjie respectively \u2013 were also featured on the programme, and were warmly received by the audience. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Plaatjie has learnt the art of setting the atmosphere at the start of the concert with soulful solo piano playing from his mentor and lecturer Ramon Alexander, and adds his own tonal colours to create his unique sound. He uses this same technique to segue from one song to the next, creating a seamless melodic sonic experience for the listener. His solo performance of \u201cMannenberg\u201d was refreshing. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • In classical terms, Nic Miso is a counter tenor, but he is currently exploring and applying his unusual vocal range to genres outside of the Western Art Music oeuvre, and he is undoubtedly going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future as he grows.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u2019n Punt van kritiek van haar was dat Nic meer sy o\u00eb moet oopmaak as hy sing, sodat hy beter met die gehoor \u201cpraat\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Met die konsep is daar niks fout nie, met die musiek nog minder, inteendeel, dis van die hoogste gehalte. Maar herbesin asseblief waar dit aangebied word. En as die program \u2019n uur se musiek belowe, moenie afskeep met tyd nie. <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
