Olwagen<\/b> Woordfees-gehore oopbek, tintelend-koorsig en omgekrap huiswaarts, soos n\u00e1 \u2019n steek van \u2019n giftige skerpioen. Hy het <b>Ink<\/b> se vrae beantwoord en by \u2019n teatergesprek vir <span class=\"highlight-text\"><b>Saartjie Botha<\/b><\/span> vertel van sy (meestal) onderbewustelike denkprosesse om di\u00e9 klassieke werk kontempor\u00ear en eietyds aan te pak.  <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-69e2e2f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"69e2e2f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b59b7f1\" data-id=\"b59b7f1\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-23a219f elementor-drop-cap-yes elementor-drop-cap-view-default elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"23a219f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;drop_cap&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Toe Christiaan Olwagen destyds aan die US geswot en in 2008 die Fleur du Cap-toekenning vir die belowendste dramastudent gewen het, het daar al koorsige debatte oor <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hedda Gabler<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gewoed. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn die klas het almal Hedda altyd gehaat \u2013 sy is aaklig, sy is walglik! \u2013 en gewonder waarom \u2019n mens \u2019n produksie oor so \u2019n vrou sou wou gaan kyk. Maar ek het haar somehow van die begin af verstaan. Ek spreek haar nie vry nie, ek s\u00ea nie wat sy doen is reg nie, but I kind of always had empathy with her. Daar\u2019s \u2019n soort aspirational honesty, iemand wat s\u00ea ek is gatvol vir games speel en vir lieg, ek gaan jou presies s\u00ea wat ek van jou dink. Ek dink dis iets wat ons almal het: Ons almal wens partykeer jy kan vir iemand s\u00ea jy irriteer die lewende wit waks uit my uit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christiaan het \u2019n enorme dog \u201cmoeilik omskryfbare\u201d liefde vir die werk van die Noorweegse dramaturg Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNadat ek in 2016 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Doll\u2019s House<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> geregisseer het, het ek daaroor gedroom om eendag \u2019n produksie van <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hedda Gabler<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> te doen. Ek het geweet Hedda sou \u2019n n\u00f3g groter uitdaging wees, want as \u2019n soort monster-martelaar is sy soveel meer kompleks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDie groot vraag was: Hoe kry \u2019n mens die gehoor om empatie te h\u00ea met so \u2019n woedende, giftige karakter? Dit is juis hierdie kompleksiteit wat my aangetrek het. Ibsen se werk is \u2019n mengsel van skerp, bytende satire en diep eksistensi\u00eble angs. Dit kom waarskynlik van my eie ervaring met terapie, waar ek al hoe meer leer oor die enorme impak wat ons onderbewussyn op ons alledaagse besluite, gedrag en ervarings het. Al hierdie issues wat ons so aantrek en wat aan ons kom plak, amper soos verf wat op jou kom sit. Ek was gevolglik meer gewaagd met hierdie produksie \u2013 bolder brushstrokes \u2013 en wou Hedda se innerlike w\u00eareld, met al haar kompleksiteit en teenstrydighede, uitbeeld. Ek wou \u2019n produksie maak wat jou binneste omkrap.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toe Christiaan dus genader is om die regie te behartig van di\u00e9 digte eksistensi\u00eble drama wat Ibsen al in 1890 geskryf het, het hy nogmaals op sy grootworddorp Stellenbosch begin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEk het weggetrek deur myself in te dink wie is Hedda n\u00f3\u00fa. Toe dink ek: Okay, ek ken \u2019n paar vroue op Stellenbosch wat vasgevang is in deals wat hulle met hulleself gemaak het die dag toe hulle besluit het om ni\u00e9 vir liefde te trou nie\u2026 ek weet presies hoe daai frustrasie en woede en onvergenoegdheid kan lyk. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDie patriargale sisteem is steeds in plek in die sin dat baie vroue nie dink hulle het ander keuses nie. Ja, hulle maak dalk slegte keuses, maar hulle dink dis al keuses wat hulle het. Dis bietjie soos die American election: Hierdie is jou enigste twee options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hy lag en s\u00ea daar gaan veel meer in die onderbewussyn aan as wat \u2019n mens besef. Die akteurs in die rolverdeling weet al sy enkelma \u2013 \u201c \u2019n verskriklik dramatiese vrou wat nogal met taal kan omgaan en speel\u201d \u2013 skuil eintlik in elke karakter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMaar ek werk grootliks op instink \u2013 Hoe voel dit? Wat sien jy? Wat beleef jy? \u2013 en dink nie altyd akademies oor hierdie dinge nie. Maande later wil mense dan in onderhoude weet: Hoekom het jy dit of daai gedoen? Hoekom is daar dieremaskers op die verhoog? Gelukkig is my shrink Jungiaans en werk met argetipes en drome\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Etlike maande nadat Christiaan die toneelstuk verwerk, verkort en die taal afgestof het om dit minder stowwerig te maak en te laat klink \u201csoos ons vandag praat\u201d, het hy \u2019n lieflike anekdote oor Ibsen raakgelees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIbsen het <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hedda Gabler<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blykbaar in sy studeerkamer geskryf met \u2019n glass jar met \u2019n skerpioen lang hom. Toe kom hy n\u00e1 \u2019n paar dae agter die skerpioen raak siek, en gooi \u2019n vrug in. Die skerpioen het nie die vrug ge\u00ebet nie, maar dit gesteek en sy gif uitgelaat en toe beter gevoel. Dit was skielik \u2019n verskriklik gepaste metafoor vir iets wat vasgevang is en dan als om dit wil steek en vergiftig omdat hulle self sleg voel.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIbsen kon nie hypocrisy, leuens en voorgee hanteer nie. \u2019n Ander interpretrasie van die skerpioenstorie is mense wat s\u00ea hy het die skerpioen daar aangehou om homself te herinner om altyd met sy pen, met sy ink, te steek. Jy moet altyd vir jou gehoor \u2019n bietjie gif gee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ook die stelontwerp, vertel Christiaan, het \u201ctoevallig\u201d ingeskakel by die metafoor van \u2019n skerpioen in \u2019n fles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLank voor ek die skerpioenstorie gelees het, het ek en Rocco [Pool, die stelontwerper] gepraat en albei in ons kop \u2019n terrarium gesien, iets wat bak onder die verhoogligte. Maak die liefde haar so bang dat sy eerder die huwelik sal kies wat sy verstaan op \u2019n intellektuele manier as om haarself oor te gee aan haar emosies?     <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDie Franse het \u2019n wonderlike woord vir haar toestand: ennui. Ennui is gelykertyd depressie, melankolie, onvergenoegdheid. Ek is nou wel nie \u2019n vrou nie, maar ek sukkel self daarmee: When is enough enough? When will you be happy? Ek dink dit is die grootste siekte van die 21ste eeu: Ek dink mense sukkel om gelukkig te wees, dis regtig moeilik. Is dit \u2019n besluit? Is dit \u2019n sameloop van omstandighede? Ekskuus\u2026 is ek nou baie heavy? Dalk is dit my pa se dominee-gene wat deurgekom!        <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWat ek wel weet, is dat teater die ideale voertuig is om hierdie kwessies te ondersoek. Mense vergeet dikwels teater het begin as terapie. By die Dionysian festivals van die Grieke het hulle \u2019n week lank teater gekyk, maskers gedra, hulleself te pletter gesuip en al die kwaad aan die binnekant uitgekry sodat die samelewing weer behoorlik kan funksioneer. Die hele gemeenskap het saamgekom vir terapie om hulle duiwels te excorcise. Ek was bevoorreg om myself te omring met \u2019n groep ongelooflik talentvolle mense, elkeen \u2019n meester in hul eie veld. Ook die fenomenale groep akteurs wat lewe aan hierdie komplekse karakters gegee het. Die ware plesier van teatermaak l\u00ea in die proses self \u2013 kosbare tyd om te eksperimenteer, ontdek en te speel.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wat het jou laat besluit om die hoofrol vir Rolanda Marais te gee?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dit was eintlik \u2019n lang tyd in wording. Ek en sy het al vir jare \u2019n sterk professionele verhouding, maar weens verskeie eksterne faktore het ons vir \u2019n ruk nie die geleentheid gehad om saam aan \u2019n projek te werk nie. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ons gesels al geruime tyd oor die moontlikheid om Hedda saam aan te pak, want ek het haar nog altyd as die perfekte Hedda gesien. Haar vermo\u00eb om komplekse vrouekarakters met diepte en nuanse te vertolk, maak haar ideaal vir die rol. Sy\u2019s ook ongelooflik braaf en nie bang om in die donker hoeke van die mens se psige te gaan krap nie. Reeds met die verwerking van die teks het ek Rolanda se stem in my kop gehoor.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Waarom het jy besluit om dans in &#8216;Hedda Gabler&#8217; te inkorporeer?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Die danse is \u2019n manier om al die emosies by Hedda te ontketen. Ibsen selfs was obsessed met dans. Hy het baie tyd in Sicili\u00eb deurgebring waar hy al sy stukke geskryf het. Dit was nog baie landelik, lank voor penicillin, en die vroue wat deur spinnekoppe gebyt is, het dan \u2019n dans gedoen, die tarantella. Die enigste manier waarop hulle van daardie gif ontslae kon raak, was om dit uit te dans. Ek dink vir Ibsen was daar iets baie aanlokliks om hierdie wilde Italiaanse vrouens te sien wat hulle woede exorcise in danse. Ek het die tarantella ook in       <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Doll\u2019s House<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gebruik, maar heeltemal anders benader as \u2019n dans waarmee iemand probeer vrybreek. Hier is dit nie \u201cek wil vrybreek\u201d nie, maar eerder: \u201cEk wil die w\u00eareld breek.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hoe verskil jou werksproses?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dit volg eintlik dikwels dieselfde patroon. Ek begin lank voor die tyd oor die produksie droom. Die vertaling- en\/of verwerkingsproses is die belangrikste vir my \u2013 dis waar ek regtig sit en kyk wat die materiaal in my losmaak. Dis \u2019n proses van ontdekking waarin die fondasie gel\u00ea word.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In die repetisietydperk is daar ruimte vir speel, om weg te neem en by te las. Wat wel die laaste tyd verskil, is my idees rondom teatermaak. Ek het myself bevry van verwagting, van impostor syndrome. Toe ek jonger was, was dit vir my belangrik wat mense dink of s\u00ea van my werk. Nou gee ek minder om. Natuurlik is ek bly as die gehoor \u2019n betekenisvolle ervaring kon h\u00ea, maar nou bepaal ek self die waarde van my werk. Elke proses is nou vir my \u2019n geleentheid om iets nuuts te leer \u2013 oor ander mense en myself.      <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section
