However, the family as we know it today emerged with the rise of industrialised capitalism and colonialism. Rather than existing beyond politics, the nuclear family serves specific systems of power. For some it does function as a haven, but for others it is the opposite \u2013 for example, family is where the most acts of rape occur, as well as murder ad many more everyday forms of trauma and harm.
