During the mid-1980s, South Africa was a country in turmoil: a state of emergency, international sanctions and increasing pressure to abolish apartheid legislation. Visiting international rugby teams (such as the All Blacks) toured under the banner of a “rebel tour.” In Stellenbosch, a group of students broke convention by teaming up with brown and black players to establish a rugby club, named after the pub Die Akker, which “sponsored” them with a crate of beer after every match. We also talk to some of the players.
