Do Afrikaners have a democratic history? Before 1994, there was a strong tradition of republicanism, elected governments and self-determination. From the ZAR and Free State republics to the Cape liberal tradition and resistance to distant authority, local decision-making was central. The participants pose probing questions about this complex relationship with democracy. They examine the Great Trek, citizen commandos and Afrikaner voices opposed to apartheid in order to redefine our political heritage.
