The cabaret deals with Eugène’s metamorphosis from a charming young journalist and a charismatic student who rubbed shoulders with Chamberlain in London, to the worn-out, shy man of his later years. Eugène Marais was a pioneer who challenged the boundaries of his time. As a poet, naturalist and thinker, he defied the norms of Afrikaner society. His struggle with addiction and his search for meaning make him a complex, but also an inspiring and relatable figure.
