In the 1950’s, Peter Blum was acclaimed as the most important poetic voice in Afrikaans of that decade. However, some considered his work “decadent” and spoke of his work as representing a poetical “maggot cult”. In 1960 Peter and his wife, Hetta, left South Africa for England. It was, he said, “out of disgust.” Soon afterwards he lay down his pen, visitors were few, and Hetta’s mental state deteriorated. Using source material from Peter and Hetta and his poems, this production follows in the footsteps of a singular figure in Afrikaans literature.
