On Christmas Day, 1997, just as the family are about to start Christmas lunch, Hantjie Jansen hears exhilarating and unexpected news. His uncle, Oom Jaques, is stepping down as Trommelmajoor – the most coveted and prestigious position in the Kerkskoor. Hantjie has waited all his life for this chance. He was born to this role, but soon realises winning his rightful place as Trommelmajoor will mean embarking on a titanic, life and death struggle between the old order and the new.
