We tend to think of the nuclear family as the natural way in which people belong together, that exists outside of politics. However, the family as we know it today emerged with the rise of industrialised capitalism and colonialism. Rather than existing beyond politics, the nuclear family serves specific systems of power. For some it does function as a haven, but for others it is the opposite – for example, family is where the most acts of rape occur, as well as murder ad many more everyday forms of trauma and harm. Should we abolish the family?
