Vlindervryis a translation of Leonard Gershe’s hit comedy Butterflies are Free. Daan Bekker is a blind 19 year old who has recently moved to Cape Town, partly to pursue a singing career but mostly to free himself from the grip of his overbearing mother. His new neighbour is the free-spirited and flakey Griet Marais with whom he falls head over heels in love. The worried Mrs. Bekker, however, breaks her promise to Daan when she pays him a surprise visit. She is not impressed with her son’s new lifestyle or the new blonde influence. Daan wages a battle against his mother for his independence but also for his new found love.
