In our increasingly Anglicized society, Afrikaans is viewed by many people as a language that does not necessarily promote their opportunities in life, and may even hinder them. The perception is reflected in parents’ language choices for their children in educational and social contexts. This while Afrikaans is a carrier of identity and culture, and home, for millions of people. The discussion will focus on the value of Afrikaans as a bridge-building and life-enhancing language – a language that contributes to empowerment, connectedness and increased opportunities in a diverse society.
