Strijdom van der Merwe’s art is deliberately transient – fleeting gestures rather than conventional sculptures. They are created on site, using only materials found in the environment, and are meant to exist for just a fraction of time before being, as it were, surrendered to the elements. The results are playful and profound, ephemeral yet enduring. Depending on the nature of the work or the commission, the artwork can also be more permanent, but he always creates it to celebrate the beauty of nature.
