When language is pushed to the limits of its expressive form, it reaches a threshold beyond which it cannot cope. As a painter, it’s Van der Merwe’s conviction that it’s in this silence, beyond language, concepts and rhetoric, where mathematics, music and painting begin, and the conditioned perspectives of history, meaning and style are transcended and sloughed away.
