The history of braaibroodjies followsFrans de Villiers as he traces the story of this braai classic. He looks back 300 years as he studies old recipe books, digs around in church archives, and finds clues and ingredients in farmers’ almanacs, travel journals, VOC correspondence, newspapers and magazines. Naturally, he also gets to examine hundreds of handwritten family recipes. What he discovers is more than an origin story: it is the history of Afrikaners, told through fire, white bread, cheese, onions, tomatoes, and – whether you like it or not – chutney.
